Innovation in Education

Innovation is change. When we dig deeper, innovation is progressive. It’s reform. In some instances, it is a revolution.

There is a common pattern in history that involves the birth of innovation. Usually, there is a status quo or common way of life, that shows up in policy, education, government, social interactions and so much more. Whether circumstantial or not, there is a need for improvement. Hence, something new is developed to create a better solution.

For years, the status quo in education has not benefited those who have been marginalized and have had limited access to quality education. Many of those who have protected this “common way”, have never had to experience the disparities of the educational system. Innovation in education can break down the walls that have stunted the growth of many in the black and brown communities and aid in equity.

Innovate in the Classroom

Innovation in teaching methods, or the way we “do” education is important for effective pedagogy. It is vital for systems to adequately teach content that is culturally and academically sensitive to students. For example, when methods of teaching only consider students who have excellent scores and impressive reading abilities, students who may be struggling or novice to those skills do not get modified approaches to learning. Hence individualized teaching methods cater to the student’s needs and experiences.

Innovation in education considers the different types of learners. For example, many students need to move while learning. Innovations can include kinesthetic modifications in their learning practices. Creating a student lead discussion or student-assisted teaching creates learning opportunities for students on a full spectrum. Well-developed methods can create better pathways of learning for all students.

Collaborate with Parents

As an educator, teaching in the classroom is only a portion of education. Having parental participation is just as important.

Developing innovation that includes a school and home crossover rewards system, maintains the needed collaboration between the teacher and parent. Parents like to be involved in the journey of their child’s progress.

Finding ways to give frequent updates is a great way to keep parents informed. These updates help parents to be accountable for their scholars. These updates are merely for discussing behavior but to also discuss goals and action plans per student. This type of innovation creates a team on both ends for optimal student success.

Get Digital. Get Social.

Education has evolved from homework solely being in books. Many major platforms have incorporated digital learning into their curriculums.

Digital academics is no longer a privilege but a necessity. It has become the “norm” for the current generation. Giving fun and thought-provoking digital homework expands the possibilities of content that students can use. Formerly, research was limited to books. Currently, using both books and digital research expands student’s information base. Space and time are no longer limited to a classroom or a building.

Scheduling digital and after-school hours can become more convenient and accessible for teachers, students, and parents. Plus, digital tutoring can help struggling students understand concepts they are missing in the classroom. Digital homework and games etc. will provide an opportunity for supplemental work, out-of-the-box thinking, and engagement most of the time for free, right at their fingertips.

Meet Them Where They Are

In 2021 can you bring innovation to the classroom without social media tricks and trends?

Incorporating student interest and social trends can create more differentiated approaches to learning. Using social media, as infectious as it has become, can be a great strategy for educational innovation. For example, social media trends such as “challenges” can be used creatively for learning.

You may find that students are more attentive because their personal interests are being connected to their education. Asking them to discuss harmful challenges and internet safety is also a benefit. The goal of education is to produce well-rounded students, so meet them where they are and post a lesson on Tic Tok or incorporate hashtags. Gain their interest. Make learning fun!

Innovation in education creates new possibilities for learning. Developing small changes shapes the world of education tremendously. When you think beyond teaching to test, when you strive for individualized teaching methods, when you embrace creativity, innovation will naturally occur. And you will be rewarded for innovation by their success. Your role is imperative, and our kids need you more than your humility may allow you to know!
