As professionals we may not have chosen our industries based on the opportunity to receive recognition and awards. Many of us focus on the lifestyle and legacy we can provide our families. But never underestimate the value and importance of gratitude. You are worthy of receiving it and as a leader you are obligated to give it when it is earned. In my strategic advising work if the company that hires me has a poor work culture I know a group of leaders who do not make an effort to boost morale, seek greatness in their team, and express genuine acts of gratitude is the root cause of the issue.
When we discuss gratitude we must understand that this goes beyond a grand gesture or act of kindness. Expressing gratitude impacts your team’s wellness, stress levels, their interaction, and performance, and engagement at work. Employee recognition and appreciation will increase retention and loyalty. When you show gratitude you are not just strengthening their willingness, you are securing the vision you have for your team and organization. Gratitude boosts morale and just like so many other emotions in our lives these effects will snow ball.

What is the best way to show gratitude? There is not a wrong way. Just start! Consider the following options:
Use an employee gamification system to reward them for exceeding expectations.
Treat them to lunch. Food is good for the soul especially when it’s free.
Shout them out on social media.
Offer quarterly and or yearly bonuses.
Offer free gym memberships.
Encourage monetary rewards for team members who come up with new great, innovative ideas.
Host company team building events to highlight their accomplishments and allow them time to reflect and network.
Personally write Happy Birthday cards.
Ask employees who you value what they would like as a thank you and what they need from you as a leader.
When you do not have the time to organize any of the above just say thank you! A genuine “thank you” and letting them know you see their efforts and reminding them how integral they are to you and the company will still lift their spirits and remind them that their work does not go unnoticed.

Gratitude generates optimism. It helps establish a unique company culture and produces a feeling of togetherness and “we are in this together”. They need the gratitude and your organization needs the team unity and motivation. It’s a win win for all of those involved.
